The White Lotus Review 2021 Tv Show Series Season Cast Crew
As “The White Lotus” (2021 release; 6 episodes of about 55 min. Each) opens with Episode 1 “Arrivals”, a guy is sitting in an airport in Hawaii, waiting for his flight home. A couple sitting across from him strikes up a conversation, and the guy mentions he is a newly wed and that he stayed at the White Lotus resort. “Isn’t that where someone got killed?” the woman asks? “And where is your wife?”. The guy doesn’t respond. We then go to “One Week Earlier”, and a group of new guests arrive at the White Lotus: the guy and his new wife; a family of four, with the sophomore HS daughter bringing a classmate along; and a older lady who looks absolutely lost… At this point we are 10 min. Into the opening episode.
Couple of comments: this is the latest from creator-writer-producer-director Mike White, best known for his prior HBO series “Enlightened”. Here he takes a look at the guests and staff of a luxurious resort in Hawaii. As Episode 1 plays out, it becomes clear that this is not your ordinary TV mini-series. Initially difficult to categorize, elements of dark, if not black, comedy show up in greater frequency. Also elements of absurdity. The cast (mostly of unknowns–at least to me) does quite well. The total package makes for a weird cocktail mix, but one that kept my interest from start to finish. In the initial 5 minutes of Episode 1, we understand that Shane’s wife has died on the resort, but we have no idea how. The teaser-preview of Episode 2 that was shown at the end of Episode 1 includes references to “a mysterious whodunnit” (or something along those lines)… I can’t wait to see this!
“The White Lotus” premiered this weekend on HBO, and Episode 1 is now available on HBO On Demand, HBO Max, Amazon Instant Video, and other streaming services. New episodes air Sunday evenings at 9 pm Eastern. If you have any interest of comedy that is more than just laugh-out-loud, or simply are a fan of Mike White’s earlier output, I’d readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.
