Review: The Wheel of Time, the next television adaptation of Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy saga at Amazon Studios, will go into production as of September 2019, according to the commercial publication Production Weekly. The Wheel of Time fan site, The Daily Trolloc, acquired a copy of the weekly publication of December 20, 2018, which lists the series among more than one hundred projects currently under development. Another notable detail is the location: the series will be shot at least partly in Prague, Czech Republic.

The epic fantasy develops in a vast and epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential women’s organization called Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a perilous journey around the world with five young men and women. Moiraine believes that one of them could be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, who according to the prophecies will save humanity or destroy it. The series is based on numerous elements of European and Asian philosophy and culture, especially the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

The producers include Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon of Red Eagle Entertainment; Ted Field and Mike Weber of Radar Pictures; Darren Lemke; and Harriet McDougal, editor and wife of Jordan. Rafe Judkins is an executive producer and showrunner.

One of the most popular fantasy franchises in the literary world, The Wheel of Time, is getting a live television adaptation. Originally written by Robert Jordan, the 1990-2013 book series, with 80 million sales, describes an expanding mythology, amalgamating feudal and magical tropes with elements of Eastern mysticism. While the project was brought to the table for the first time by Sony, the latest development has acquired its home.

Amazon gave an order for the series to The Wheel of Time in October 2018, configuring the project as a one-hour series that will be aired on Amazon Prime Video, as reported on the deadline and confirmed by a retweet of APV. The move was the culmination of what had been a one and a half year process since April 2017, when it was first reported that Sony Pictures Television was moving forward with the television project.

The Wheel of Time follows Moiraine, a member of a secret society of magical women, called the blue Ajah of the Aes Sedai. He embarks on a perilous journey with five young men he goes to as a mentor, one of whom he believes could be the reincarnation of someone prophesied to save or destroy humanity. The books have philosophical influences of European and Asian culture, in particular Buddhism and Hinduism, centered on the idea of a time of cyclical nature.
