Shudder and RLJE Films’ upcoming movie The Pale Door brings together two unexpected genres when outlaws meet witches in a horror-western mashup. It’s not a combination audiences get to see very often, but they mesh surprisingly well together. Here’s everything we know about The Pale Door.

Director Aaron B. Koontz decided to bring the two genres together in The Pale Door because he believes outlaws and witches have something of a kinsmanship with one another. As he told Movieweb, both groups naturally bring about conflict and have deep, anti-hero roots in cinematic history. He went on to point out that in film, outlaws were men who considered themselves above the law, and witches were women persecuted at the hands of typically male religious zealots. It goes to show that witches and outlaws would butt heads in a fascinating way when paired together in a film.

The upcoming film was written by Koontz, Cameron Burns and Keith Lansdale. In the coming months, audiences will have multiple options for viewing The Pale Door. Let’s look at what we know about the movie so far.

The Pale Door is getting something of an unusual rollout. The movie drops on Digital and VOD on August 21, 2020, along with a limited theatrical release the same day. But as RLJE Films and Shudder acquired The Pale Door together, the film will quickly be released on the horror movie streaming service at later date. As it seems that studios may be opting to shorten window between theatrical and on-demand releases in order to survive in a Coronavirus-ravaged economy, audiences can expect to see more untraditional movie releases like this in the near future.

The Shudder horror movie picks up after a group of outlaws bungle a robbery. After the failed attempt, the group seeks shelter in a local town, where they’re taken in by a brothel. The men quickly learn that the women who take them in are, in fact, a coven of witches — and those witches have something sinister in mind for them. The outlaws will have to fight to make it through the night.

The trailer for The Pale Door sets up a deadly conflict between the witches and the outlaws unlucky enough to cross their paths. In the brief look shown at the film, it looks like their feud may even cross supernatural lines.
