Spring, 1923, nearing the end of the Irish Civil War: a simple man living in a simple home is suddenly informed that his closest friend is no longer his friend, the reason being: “I just don’t like you no more.”

A premise such as that of The Banshees of Inisherin offers not only biting comedy and satire, but also heartbreaking drama and conflict, not unlike previous work from writer/director Martin McDonagh-and the resulting film offers both and more.

Every character in the film, primarily Colin Farrell’s protagonist, wrestles with whether or not he is an outcast in his own hometown. What do his “friends” truly think of him? Is he worth being friends with? Does he belong? Is he a nice person-and even if he is, does it really matter?

Juxtaposing this conflict with the beautiful Irish countryside, where everyone looks, acts, and speaks like they exist within an uncensored John Ford film, makes for sharp humor that critiques the conflict, as well as compelling drama that develops it.

Balancing the two is a risky act, one that McDonagh has been careful to do in the past (most recently to critical acclaim with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), but The Banshees of Inisherin may well be his best work.

The story structure, character development, and production value are all top-notch and, despite coarse language and a few graphic images along the way, possibly quite accessible for wide audiences.

The story’s ultimate commentary on friendships, loneliness, belonging, and legacy are just as relevant for filmgoers in 2022 as they will be in 100 years. Perhaps it is no coincidence that McDonagh sets this story almost exactly 100 years before the film’s release (or, for that matter, the 2023 Academy Awards, where the film will certainly compete).

The film’s final moments may be too polarizing or ambiguous for some; however, there is still closure, which will leave audiences to discern their own relationships as these characters have.
