HBO has taken subscribers to mythical lands and the reality of upper-crust Manhattan. Now it’s going to take them to Pahrump, Nevada.
“Small Town News: KPVM Pahrump,’ a six-part half-hour documentary, will launch with back-to-back episodes on Monday, August 2 at 9 p.m. eastern, with new episodes airing subsequent Mondays at the same time. The series will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
The series look at life at a privately owned TV station in a small desert town, and is executive produced by filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. HBO says the series spotlights a “scrappy, hardworking local news broadcaster looking to expand into a bigger market during challenging times.”
At the center of the series is KPVM, located 62 miles west of Las Vegas and one of only 95 independently owned news stations still extant in the United States. The station is owned and operated by Vernon Van Winkle, and his wife Ronda, a singer/songwriter, and tackles the news taking place around a population of over 37,000. Viewers will also meet Deanna, the news director; Eunette, one of the anchors; Missey, a reporter, and her husband, John, who serves a both the weatherman and a sales associate. The station harbors ambitions of expanding into Las Vegas and building a new tower to provide a stronger broadcast signal
The series is also executive produced by Nikki Calabrese and Nelson Walters; produced by Christi Martinelli and Steven Sims. For HBO. the senior producer is Sara Rodriguez, and the executive producers are Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller.
