Some of us have been dreaming since we were little of walking down the aisle; others have a desperate yearning to get on the property ladder.

A new Netflix series, Marriage or Mortgage, shines a light on the seemingly contradictory dreams of couples considering their immediate life choices.

“I want our wedding to be the best wedding of all the ones that we’ve been to,” says one wannabe groom.

“We want to start a family soon. We’ll need the space,” is the argument coming from a prospective bride with her sights set on home-ownership.

However, McQueen says couples can have both. She advises them to spend less on their wedding, so as not to derail their property-buying plans forever.

“We try to have a benchmark 20 per cent of your combined net income to spend on your wedding. If you’re spending more than that, that’s because mum and dad are contributing.”

She says that figure should then continue to be an annual savings goal – and after the wedding should be put towards a house deposit.

McQueen says sometimes people who can least afford it do prioritise a wedding. “Some people will have eight kids and feel they have sacrificed a lot. They feel the need for the reward.”

She says a lot of the work of financial advice is about helping people deal with the psychology of saving, spending, and reaching financial goals.

Blenheim woman Shannon Hales says she and her partner decided to buy a house two years ago when they moved back from Brisbane.

They spent money they had put aside for a wedding on coming back to deal with a family emergency. Hales says they decided to buy a house after realising how expensive renting would be.

She and her partner Andrew Root already had children, now aged 2 and 4.

Whatever your wedding plans, a budget is called for, financial strategist Hannah McQueen says.

“We already had our kids, and once you have kids you want to set up some stability,” Hales said.

“That’s more important than just one day.”

They paid under $500,000 for their Blenheim home, and are glad they bought when they did.

Hales recently entered a win-a-wedding competition, but ended up coming in second place.
