“Mack & Rita” is a fictional story. The cinema canon has always included age-change movies. Feel-good stories about self-acceptance have warmed the hearts of audiences for decades, from Big to 13 to 30, and many have become timeless masterpieces.

The subgenre now investigates the experience of a woman in her 70s, a story that is rarely aired on television. Mack (You’s Elizabeth Lail), a 30-year-old influencer who feels cut off from her childhood, is the subject of the television show Mack & Rita.

Mack & Rita follows a disenchanted 30-year-old influencer named Mack (You’s Elizabeth Lail), who feels disconnected from her youth. “I grew up always feeling like an older woman trapped in a little girl’s body,” says Mack in the promo. “I did my best to keep my inner old lady to myself.” But during a bachelorette party in Palm Springs, she stumbles upon a past life regression session (led by Red Rocket’s Simon Rex), and when she emerges, she’s shocked to find her old inner girl unleashed, literally, as she has turned into his 70- year-old self.

Directed by The Morning Show director Katie Aselton, the film follows Mack as she rechristens herself Glamy Granny “Aunt Rita,” and comes to terms with how she’s always felt inside. Freed from the expectations of others, Rita finds herself an unlikely social media star and at the center of a budding romance with Mack’s (Schitt’s Creek) dog handler Dustin Milligan.

But when she finally recovers, will the physical transformation be as permanent as the inner one?
