Julie and the Phantoms Review 2020 Tv Show Series Season Cast Crew Online
Stars: Madison Reyes, Charlie Gillespie, Owen Joyner
The man behind High School Musical is back with a new teen series complete with a catchy soundtrack. Kenny Ortega, who introduced the world to Troy and Gabriella in Disney‘s 2006 smash hit film, is back in action with a new Netflix series. The platform released a first look at Julie and the Phantoms today, introducing the cast of Ortega’s new musical comedy.
Julie and the Phantoms, which is based on a Brazilian series, follows Julie, a high school student who stopped making music after the death of her mother. Enter the ghosts of three 90s heartthrob musicians: Luke, Reggie and Alex. When the three spirits, who all died in 1995, appear in the old studio Julie’s mom used to record in, she begins to rediscover her love for singing and songwriting. Together, the ghosts and Julie form a new band, Julie and the Phantoms.
In today’s promo released by Netflix, we get a behind-the-scenes look at the casting process. Madison Reyes, who plays Julie, can’t contain her joy after learning she secured the lead role. “I did it, mama,” she exclaims in a phone call to her mom.
The series also stars Charlie Gillespie (Luke), Jeremy Shada (Reggie), Owen Patrick Joyner (Alex). Ortega was set on casting a Latinx actor to play Julie, and formed a family around her character, casting Carlos Ponce as her father and Sonny Bustamante as her brother. Twilight actor Booboo Stewart also signed on to the project to play skater boy Willie.
“I wanted this to be a Latina family, and I also wanted a Julie ‘from the block’ — a young girl that was relatable, that other young women could relate to,” Ortega told Entertainment Tonight. “There was a moment where we wondered if we could really ‘find what Kenny was looking for.’”
