One possible interpretation: Why is Grace looking quite different from the other nanny candidates (clothes, behaviour, too much into the books..too much old fashioned – maybe looks like how Mary would imagine herself if she was 20 years younger)? Why is Mary giving lot of her clothes to the Grace? Why is Grace wearing Mary’s swimsuit (orange and black)? Why is Grace having split personality disorder, with specifically these two personalities: 1. a lovely carrying girl who adores children and is always there for them (like devoted mother that Mary actually is), 2. and the other is sexy domina that is in total control of her husband (which Mary would like to be also).
Mary said that she is becoming totally different person when she starts to write. Int the beginning of the movie she also has a bit harsh conversion with publishers, where its mentioned that she had difficult past (so Grace could be young Mary that was mistreated by her parents and the only survived child).
Lot of things point out that Grace is actually Mary, and Mary has multiple personality disorder.
That is why her husband tells “her” in the restaurant/caffe that she looks sometimes like twenty (when she has Grace personality) and sometimes like 40 (when she has Mary personality). In the shower scene when he sees Grace, he tells her to stop and that he don’t want to play her games anymore – he knows that Mary has a “Grace personality” but he accepted to play it with her because that was the time that he could be intimate with her. When Mary was in her original “writer and mother” personality then she was not so much interested into sexual fantasies with Tom.
Why does Mary still likes and visits Grace even though Grace killed her best friend Elaine? In the last scene, Mary is visiting Grace in psychiatric ward – which could actually be that Mary is going back to her therapy.
