Zombie graphic novel Daybreak will soon become a Netflix show. The streaming subscription service plans on adapting the graphic novel for a 10-episode series.
Daybreak, written by Brian Ralph, takes place after the zombie apocalypse, focusing on survivors and their daily lives. What sets Daybreak apart, though, is that it tells the story as if the reader were living it. The reader is part of the story, and characters within the graphic novel talk to the reader as the novel progresses. The book even starts with a one-armed man rescuing the reader from a pile of debris. The overall graphic novel is both dramatic and funny, with equal parts gore and humor.
Hollywood gossip reports that Netflix will adapt the graphic novel into a television show, with co-creating duties going to Aron Eli Coleite (Star Trek: Discovery) and Brad Peyton and Jeff Fierson from ASAP Entertainment (Rampage). Coleite will also executive produce and act as showrunner, while Peyton will direct,
Daybreak isn’t the only young adult-targeted series Netflix has in the works. The company also ordered a teen drama series based on Lord of the Flies. That show will focus on a group of teenagers who go out of town but come home to find the entire town missing, leaving them to learn how to survive. Netflix also recently picked up the adaptation of graphic novel Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. Although that particular adaptation spent a lot of time getting shuffled around Hollywood, the project finally landed at Netflix as a TV series. Coleitte will also co-write the first episode of Locke & Key, along with Hill.
Netflix puts a lot of time, energy and money into its original content. The company expects to spend $12 to $13 billion in 2018 alone, more than any single film studio. Netflix has come a long way since its early days as a mail-order DVD rental service. Its streaming service changed the way that television viewers watch TV. As it stands, Netflix currently has some of the highest-rated TV shows on the market, including Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black and GLOW.
Daybreak is just another feather in the Netflix cap. The series will appeal to the streaming subscription service’s subscribers and offer them yet another reason to prefer Netflix over traditional and broadcast cable. Some might argue that the zombie genre is overdone. Others, though, will appreciate that Daybreak should offer a zombie apocalypse that is different.
