If you’re transporting a vehicle full of prisoners, the last thing you want is to be stuck with them in the middle of nowhere.

That’s what happens to the driver (Javier Gutiérrez, Marshland) of a prison van carrying convicts in upcoming Spanish-language Netflix thriller Below Zero. In the middle of the night, driving through a desolate area with freezing temperatures, the vehicle is brutally assaulted. Our bad-luck cop survives and is forced to fortify his position while the con men search for a way to take him out.

The trailer suggests a tense little thriller, and another potential Spanish hit for Netflix following strong films like The Invisible Guest and The Platform. This is the second feature for director and co-writer Lluís Quílez, who made his feature debut with English-language 2014 Julia Stiles horror film Out of the Dark.

On this last weekend of January, Netflix premieres a new Spanish action thriller set on the icy roads of Castilla-La Mancha. Directed by Lluís Quílez (Out of the Dark) and co-written with Fernando Navarro ( Secret origins ), the film delayed its theatrical release several times due to the pandemic until, finally, the platform took over the rights to broadcast it around the world . The film does not go with frills and introduces us to the subject quickly . Thus, after a short approach to the ironclad principles of the protagonist, Quílez lets loose a handful of unpredictable characters within a claustrophobic and impenetrable setting . With a bit of police controversy, criminals of different kinds playing with our sympathy and a bloodthirsty villain who will not stop until he achieves his goal, the film has the ideal ingredients for all good genre entertainment .
